Solutions for Senior Living

Lynn Brannan, producer of a local cable TV show "Solutions for Senior Living," recently featured Ellen Cantor, ASID,"Aging in Place" Chair and Evelyn Grodan, Industry Partner member of ASID, CAPS, Accessibility Consultant and Project Manager for the "Aging in Place" project along with Tony Molino, Atty./ Representative for the Torrance Kiwanis Foundation. The segment "Aging in Place" will air on cable TV the month of in September.

Ellen Cantor, Evelyn Grodan and Tony Molino Chairperson for the ASID/LA Aging in Place Project and Evelyn, Accessibility Consultant/Project Manager and Tony Molino, representing Kiwanis, discussed their recently completed "Aging in Place" remodeled of the home of a disabled, low-income senior in Torrance. The AIP project combined 2 small bathrooms to create a universally designed bathroom and remodeled the rest of the interior of the home.

Also discussed on the show were was a 14 Point Checklist that would be of interest to all Seniors to help make their homes safer and allow them to be more independent.

  1. Install hand rails on both sides of all steps (inside and out)
    (Rope lighting /motion sensors - Remove)

  2. Install easy to grasp handles for drawers, cabinet doors and lever handles for doors

  3. Widen doorways to 34-36" and hallways to 48"

  4. Remove high piled carpeting / one floor thru-out for easier transition

  5. Add additional lighting inside and out - dimmers and motion sensors and contrasting colors along walkways

  6. Install closet lights, as well as adjustable rods and shelves

  7. Raise the height of your toilet or purchase comfort height ADA energy efficient low consumption toilets and add/portable bidets

  8. Install a walk in shower with no ledge and hand-held shower with a 7-foot hose

  9. Install grab bars in shower/tub and around toilet

  10. Eliminate all stairs and install lifts-ramps-elevators

  11. Improve the air quality of your home - add whole house purifier

  12. Install motorized adjustable cabinets/shelves - add different height counter tops with contrasting edges

  13. Add a whole house power back up source (generator)

  14. Add a first floor bathroom w/walk in shower
